If you're curious about how it really feels to have braces, you came to the right place :)

Ok.
I'm really nervous.
I take a good look at my teeth. It will be the last time I'll see them this way. I feel kinda nostalgic, but I know that I'll be trading these babies in for a beautiful Hollywood smile.

I go sit on the chair (well, sit, it's more laying with your mouth wide open). The orthodontist doesn't talk much. She just says: 'you must be nervous huh? don't worry!'.

She takes out my spacers (which hurt sooo much I couldn't sleep at times!). I feel instant relief. I'm happy :) Now the ortho starts fitting the molar bands. Okay, this isn't exactly comfortable... But I survive and what she does afterwards I can't really remember exactly.
The ortho and the assistant talk about children and sailing... I can only listen with my mouth wide open. When she's put the brackets on, I can go and rinse. I feel with my tongue. It feels strange, but not too bad.
I go sit back in the chair and she puts in the arch wire. Then she asks me what color ligatures I want. I chose 'clear' because I don't want my braces to be too obvious.
When it's all done and over with I get to look in the mirror. I think it looks terrible. I'm a real metalmouthmonster!!!!
When I go out of the office with my dad, I start crying. My dad tries to comfort me, an elderly couple looks at me and feels sorry for me.
In the car I keep looking in the mirror. I keep staring at my teeth. Am I going to have to wear these for an entire year??!!!

In two days I'll be going to the ortho's office for my first adjustment.
I'm really happy, especially because I'll be getting new ligatures. I'm gonna take light-pink ones this time.
Taking clear the last time was a BIG mistake! They stained yellow after only three days because I forgot that I couldn't eat curry without staining them. Because they were allready ruined I thought 'what the heck' and just ate curry and pickles and mustard and other staining foods.  (you can see the yellow of my ligatures on the 'progress' page at the close-ups of my teeth)

So today I went in for my first adjustment. I was very happy because I would choose new color of ligatures.
The ortho took of the old ligatures, then took of the archwires. She asked me if I wanted the same ligatures as last time: that was a big nono! I'm never ever going to take clear again!
I had seen a picture of someone with pink ligatures and I really liked that, so I chose pink :). She put on a new archwire (it's a thicker wire now, which is good. My first (thinner) wire popped out twice. The ortho said that probably was because very thin wires pop out more easily) and that was it :). No pain, nothing.
Afterwards I went into the city with my dad and my sisters, and I ate a big bowl of spaghetti :) God, I'm so happy it doesn't hurt 'coz I was really afraid it would!
But actually, I like that new tension on my teeth... It makes me feel like I'm making new progress already :)

My next appointment is May 14th. I'm really sad I have to wait such a long time, but the ortho's office will be closed for some time in May I think, hence the longe time I'll have to wait. Well, I guess patience is a virtue...

I put a picture of my new ligatures in the 'Progress' section

Okey, so a few hours later; pain! Luckily just on one side, so I can still eat (kinda)... Hmmm, I guess it'll pass away soon... Luckily I'm good at dealing with pain :)

I need to get something off my chest... I hate the fact that I have to SUCK my chocolate easter egg's instead of being able to bite directly into them!!!!

I went to my grandparents for lunch today and they made spaghetti. Great! I love spaghetti! But what I don't love is spaghetti getting stuck in my braces!

As you've probably noticed I'm quite irritated today... I can't bite into anything with my front teeth because they hurt so much, so I have to bite with my molars, which isn't exactly easy, comfortable, elegant,...

But there's always a bright side and there is one now too. Whenever I look into the mirror I get more and more confident. I was thinking today that if my teeth were like they are now naturally, I wouldn't have gotten braces. My front teeth don't looke so huge anymore, and the teeth next to them are turning very well.. The only thing I have now is spaces between my front teeth and the ones next to them (I should look up what they're called some time...). But I'm sure that'll be solved in no time too...

You now, with the first month already done and being in the second one, I feel like things are really speeding up. I think my year will be over before I know it :)

I'm kinda freakin' here! My teeth moved great until three days after my adjustment, but for a week now, they haven't moved at all :( I'm really really really hoping that this is normal and they will start moving again... I don't want to wait another month before they start moving again...
I'll go and as what the people on the Metal Mouth Forum think.... As soon as I've get an answer I'll post it here for you :)

I must say, the people om the MM Forum are the best!
I posted a topic about my being concerned that my teeth wouldn't move anymore for the next month, and these were the reactions:

'From the different stories I've read here on Archwired it would seem that patients go through phases of movement. Often an adjustment is the reason for an increase or decrease in movement. One thing to remember is that youre bite is being changed by the elastisity of the archwire ( correct me if I'm wrong ) so once youre teeth have moved to where the archwire is pulling them there is no more force excerting presure on the teeth. In other words your teeth will stop moving. From what I understand different patience have different rates at which their teeth let themselves be moved. It only makes sence that if they moved fast the first few days of the adjustment that there will be significantly less movement afterwards.

Basicly what I'm saying is " that sounds normal ". I hope my technical views here weren't too confusing and helped put your mind at ease?'

'I remember reading articles about modern orthodontics which said something different (correct me if I'm wrong, Dr.Rick is an expert here :)) With braces, teeth are under CONSTANT pressure. It's not only a few days after the adjustment. That's the basic difference between removable appliances and our braces.

The fact that teeth stop hurting a few days after the adjustment doesn't mean they stopped moving.... The rapid movement, I think, is a reaction to new condition in your mouth, but after that "initial adjustment" teeth still move. Otherwise we'd be seeing our orthos every other day :)

Hey, Pickleweezle, I think your teeth do move, but you don't notice that as much as you did in the first days! That's easy: you were used to your crooked teeth because they looked the same way over YEARS. So, even a slight change made you see the difference. Believe me, your teeth do move, even if you don't see your incisors or canines move! Your bite changes, so does the position of your molars or bicuspids... Wait some more days/weeks and you'll see :)'

'Even when they appear not to be moving, important things are still going on: the bone is being absorbed on one side and rebuilding on the other side. Sometimes the movement is too small to notice as it happens. Not to worry: it is a long process in teeny steps.'

'Pickleweezle,
I don't really have much to add that the others haven't already explained, but you often seem so upbeat and reassuring in your posts and especially your responses to others' posts that I feel I need to weigh in, too, to tell you not to get down about this seeming lack of movement. The others are right: Something is almost always going on in the mouth, whether visible or not, whether rapid or not. My three times in fixed braces totaled about four years, and I recall only occasional times when I looked in the mirror and thought: "Wow, that changed fast!" Yet when all was said and done, the teeth had come a long way from where they began. Good luck and keep smiling. :)'

Again: thanks you guys ;)

I'm sick and tired of my pink ligatures! I want grey ones!
And I want my next adjustment to be tomorrow!
But no... I have to wait another 3 weeks and a half....
My teeth aren't really movinga lot... I feel like I'm standing still...

Sunday, April 25th 2004

Just got back from a weekend in London. It was great! Ofcourse I didn't like going out to eat very much, but my tongue has become very good at retrieving food from my braces (sounds do yuk!) so it wasn't THAT big of a deal :)
In two weeks I'm going back to the ortho for my second adjustment. I'm really looking forward to it, because my cheeks were fine until today. They healed up great after my first adjutstment, but now my archwire is poking me and opening them up again, and I can't cut it because it isn't long enough :-(...
This Wednesday, May 5th, will be my two-month anniversary in braces.... I think I'll celebrate :-) Only ten more months to go!!!!! (God, this'll be over before I realise it... )

Tuesday, May 4th 2004

haven't written anything in a while because everything went smoothly.... BUT today suddenly my archwire popped of (after 5 weeks of peace) and when I checked in the mirror I saw I was missing a ligature on the bracket next to my molarband.... great!
So I called the ortho and she told me to clip it until I got to the next bracket with ligature. I tried! I really did! I used nailclippers and two different pairs of scissors but the damn thing wouldn't budge.... It got completely distorted so now it's even more annoying then it was before... poor me!
So I called the ortho again. Apparently she found the whole situation rather funny :-) But I can go to her on Friday, so we'll see. Ofcourse I have an appointment for the Friday after that, so I'm calling her tomorrow to see if I can have my adjustment this week instead of the next. Hope so, because if I have to go by train (which I will have to do) it takes me about an hour to get there! So lets pray to God that Friday will fit into her schedule!!!
I'll let you know! ;-)

Wednesday, May 5th 2004

HOORAY HOORAY HOORAY! Called the ortho's office (again! poor guys.... they must think I'm awful ... ) and I got an appointment for tomorrow, and even better, my next adjustment is tomorrow too!!! So you can expect a lot of pictures!!!! God, I'm so happy! This is my second adjustment of the approximately 12 I'll be needing.... Just hope she doesn't have bad news for me tomorrow! And I'm actually hoping I'll get elastics, because I still want my profile to change a little! Well, we'll see :-)

Tuesday, May 25th 2004

I haven't posted anything in a while, I know. i'm so sorry :-)
Anyway, my adjustment was great, got a thicker wire, got tooth-colored ligatures (I think I have fallen in love....they're great!) but I haven't seen a lot of movement.... I guess most of the big changes have been done already, and in the next month rather small changes will happen... ah, well, fine with me :-) I know when I smile now, that I've got straight(er) teeth, and with my new ligs, my full metal braces are a lot less noticeable... :-) For me this mission is already a succes ....

This may sound really strange, but fixing my teeth has also made me want to fix the other thing I've been having complexes about since I was just a little kid: my ears. It won't even be that expensive, since my insurance pays back a big part of the money...

I'll keep you posted ;-)
